ABUJA, NIGERIA (Worthy News)-- Although nine of Nigeria's 37 states are now under Islamic law, its penalties are enforced to different degrees of strictness, according to BarnabasAid.
Three of the nine states embrace Sharia solely for Muslims who follow its precepts for family law, but in Kano state, Islamic law is imposed on all its citizens, including Christians.
Recently Kano deployed thousands of police officers to ensure that rules regarding gender segregation -- that prohibit drivers from carrying both men and women in the same vehicle -- and Islamic dress codes are enforced; especially targeted are rickshaw taxi drivers who often wear shorts and sleeveless shirts, both of which are considered a breach of the dress code.
On Sunday, nearly 50 men and women were detained at a birthday party for "indecent dress that is against the practice of Islam".
Other violators of strict Sharia have found themselves paraded through the streets as an example to would-be transgressors.
